Four Reasons Why The Nikon P900 Is a Great Camera For Travel!

Have you ever seen something that you’d like to take a photo of, but you can’t get close enough to get a good shot? Have you ever been to the zoo and your photos all have the fence or enclosure in front of the animal? I actually heard about this awesome camera online and did some research to see what kind of photos it could take.  While there are a couple minor downfalls to the Nikon P900, it is a great camera for many reasons. I have had this camera for less than a year, but I have used it for many great photos so I’d like to tell you and show you why I really like this camera and why I think you will too.

  1. No lenses to change- While some people like the idea of changing lenses and customizing to your situation, it can be time consuming. Extra lenses also take up space! When you’re traveling, even if it’s in the car, taking extra camera equipment can be a bear. The Nikon P900 has a built in zoom lens that is attached. Because of the zoom distance, it is quite a large lens therefore a tad heavier than most cameras with attached lenses, but it is worth it in the long run. You will have one camera (with no extra lenses) so it can fit into your luggage easily, you won’t necessarily need an extra camera bag.

2. Long Battery Life – Joel and I went to the Columbus Zoo recently and were there for approximately 5+ hours. (Check out my post about that here) I used the camera almost the entire time, taking probably 200 photos. I’m the kind of person that I’d rather take too many, than come home to find out that my only photo was blurry, so needless to say I probably take more photos than most people. 🙂 Once we returned home, I did not charge the camera battery. I then used it to shoot a few random photos during the week and we just returned home from a trip the National Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio where we also spent 5 hours. Again, I used the camera almost the entire time and at the very end of the trip, the battery said it was exhausted. In my opinion, 10+ hours of consistently taking photos is a great battery life. Now, if you have the opportunity to have a spare battery charged and waiting, then that’s even better, but not a necessity as most people won’t be taking photos for 10 hours every day.

3. Easy to Use–  Do you look at “fancy” cameras and wish you knew how to use them? The Nikon P900 is pretty easy to use, so all you have to do is turn it on. If you’d like to, you may learn more in depth techniques to use this camera. You can learn how to use it in different settings to achieve different effects in your photography. If you are a beginner or you’d like to take good photos without learning in depth techniques, you can keep the camera on auto and still get great photos!

4. You Can Get Great Photos! – One of the main reasons why I wanted this camera when I learned about it, is that it has an insane zoom!! With an 83x zoom, the camera has a powerful 2000mm lens allowing you to get up close and personal with your subject.  Whether you’re far away or really far away, you can get photos that look like you’re standing right in front of the subject. 🙂

One thing to keep in mind, when you’re zooming in almost all the way, you’ll need to steady the camera in order to keep your subject in the shot and in focus. If you are on a trip, at the zoo for instance, and don’t want to carry a tripod (which I totally understand, I wouldn’t either) make sure that you find a fence post or use someone’s shoulder to set the camera on while you zoom way in.  While I’m taking photos of the moon, I actually lean up against the side of my car to steady the camera.  This is only if you’re using the zoom close to it’s maximum. You won’t necessarily need to steady the camera with normal zoom distances.

If you purchase the Raynox DCR-250 Macro Lens Adapter, you can get amazing close up photos of tiny things as well. 🙂  Here’s an example I found online since I haven’t had the pleasure of using the Macros Lens adapter yet.

I think it’s amazing that you can get photos like this with a camera readily available and super easy to use! I love the Nikon P900 for several reasons as you’ve read!
