A look inside the Dutch theme park Nellis’ Village

As you drive by, your curiosity will be peaked when you see a ferris wheel, a giant wooden shoe and other fun attractions along one of the main drags in Holland, Michigan.

Holland is best known for it’s Dutch heritage. One visit and you’ll see just how proud the residents are! Nellis Dutch Village is a fun and cute attraction that showcases the pride and history of the Dutch heritage prevalent here in Holland.

Joel’s grandfather came over from The Netherlands in the late 1950’s. The Dutch pride in our family is strong, so when we were going to be close to Holland Joel made sure we had time to visit.

Among the places we visited was Nellis Dutch Village. There are rides, educational parts, souvenirs/shopping and more! With so much to see and do, I made sure to take photos! Here’s a look at some of what Nellis Dutch Village has to offer…

This Carl Frei Dutch street organ is a beautiful hand made pipe organ. It comes to life regularly during the daily dancing showcases. Originating on the cobblestone of The Netherlands, these beautiful street organs bellowed music through the streets during parades. The “Golden Angel” organ is now a permanent fixture at Nellis Dutch Village.

Joel and his family introduced me to the game of Sjoelen (Sjoelbak). I had never heard of this game before meeting him, but his family had one and it was passed on to us. In fact, his grandfather made it.

I know it looks different, but think of a cross between bowling and shuffle board. HAHA You slide “pucks” down and try to get them in the holes at the end. Based on which slots you get them into, you get a certain number of points.

Showcasing Dutch history, Nellis has a room with the game! Of course we had to play! This would be the one and only time I actually beat Joel! 🙂
